Many of my favourite paintings are by the French impressionists of the late 1800’s. Their use of colour tantalises the senses. Watching these trees, I can definitely relate to what they saw and how they were inspired by the beauty, gesture and colour in the figures defining their landscape.

One thing about Australia, the mainland at least, is that we don’t have any deciduous native trees. So I guess we just have to find them in places that aren’t quite so ‘natural’, like in this chestnut orchard which I’ve photographed each year since 2018 as the branches find themselves bare.
