Resilience, Mutawintji

Mutawintji, in outback New South Wales has seen its fair share of land degradation and cultural destruction, and that’s before I mention the hoards of goats still running wild, eating everything in their path and often dying of starvation or dehydration in the gullies.  They were released by land holders once upon a time and have completely changed the landscape.

The traditional owners used this place for gatherings and ceremonies until the white fella’s came along.  Some of their paintings are still present, but even they are being rubbed off by the goats.

This tree grows in the sandy floor of a rocky canyon, it reminds me of resilience in the land and a hope for the future.
